The Cleansing of Threewells
Cinnamon BunThe Cleansing of Threewells is Broccoli Bunch’s sustained effort to purge the abandoned settlement of hostile undead, culminating in the defeat of the level-two Wraith of Threewells by Darkwood. The event gives concrete form to Broccoli’s Cinnamon Bun identity: a support-oriented class described as being “Too good for this world” and dedicated to cleansing impurities in the name of love and justice. Yet the purification is not gentle. It demands repeated violence, grief, endurance, and the conversion of ordinary cleaning into combat magic.
Causes and Setting
Threewells is presented as a settlement overrun by ghosts, including Sentinel Ghosts and a more powerful wraith connected to an opened pit. Broccoli proceeds cautiously through the town’s main street, keeping low, peering into windows, and searching the houses for further apparitions. The hostile dead repeatedly answer friendly intentions with murder, turning what might have been an act of assistance into a dangerous purge.
The supernatural source of the crisis becomes clearer when Broccoli reaches the pit. The wraith hovers above it, twisting as though in pain while also seeming to relish the sensation. Broccoli suspects that it is feeding on something rising from the hole, perhaps Evil mana. The image makes Threewells more than a town populated by wandering ghosts: it is a place where an underground corruption sustains the undead and gives the cleansing a specific focal point.
Course of the Purge
Broccoli’s first decisive encounters establish Cleaning magic as an offensive force. When a ghost reaches the character and claws into the face and the back of the head, Cleaning magic is fired into it, causing the apparition to burst apart. The spell is therefore not merely domestic utility. It can directly destroy unlife, although Broccoli must combine it with improvised physical attacks when several ghosts close in.
The repeated fighting produces both mechanical advancement and emotional damage. After five Sentinel Ghosts are wiped out, the system grants experience and unlocks Makeshift Weapon Proficiency for repeating a Special Action often enough. The reward converts desperate improvisation into a recognized capability, but it does not make the violence emotionally easy. Broccoli cries over the deaths and struggles with the fact that one of the creatures killed was the only friend available at the time, then forces the character to continue because a quest and mission remain unfinished.
The final confrontation is planned rather than accidental. Broccoli leaves the backpack on a nearby doorstep and approaches the wraith with a sequence of improvised measures: first the showerhead-flail, then the magic wand thrown through the apparition, and finally Cleaning magic once the enemy is distracted. The showerhead is an especially revealing weapon, because it joins mundane sanitation to supernatural combat. Earlier, Cleaning had been a rank-F skill concerned with cleaning faster and better; in Threewells, the same principle becomes a method of destroying ghosts.
The battle ends without a single spectacular finishing blow. Broccoli weakens the level-two wraith through repeated strikes, continuing the assault as its ability to fight diminishes. The system finally records that the Wraith of Threewells by Darkwood has been laid to rest and awards bonus experience because Broccoli has overcome a monster above the character’s level.
Consequences and Development
The cleansing establishes a progression from ordinary maintenance to ritualized purification. Broccoli sweeps dust into a neat pile, uses a file folder to place it in a chest repurposed as garbage storage, and then brings out a showerhead, mop, and bucket. The showerhead’s spray is weak and drains mana quickly, but it still allows the floor to be scrubbed. This practical labor and the later ghost-killing spell belong to the same continuum: cleaning is first a way to restore a room, then a way to restore a town, and finally a force capable of confronting the corruption beneath it.
The event also links purification to classification. Broccoli’s Cinnamon Bun class defines the world through the language of purity, impurity, love, and justice, while the system measures progress through levels, ranks, experience, and unlocked proficiency. What appears morally absolute in the class description becomes operational through tasks and rewards. The defeat of the ghosts is consequently both an ethical act and a measurable advancement in the leveling system.
Threewells’ purification also prepares Broccoli for later encounters with other forms of contamination. The character later questions whether Slimes are sapient before learning that they are concentrations of ambient mana that cling to magical targets, and reacts physically to the stench of abominations after escaping them. Broccoli hides in mud during a dangerous movement with Amaryllis, endures insect-filled stew rather than waste a meal, and confronts the implications of undeath when Gunther explains that death mana can damage a region if left too long. Against this wider pattern, Threewells is the earliest major instance in which Broccoli tries to decide what must be removed, what can be endured, and what may still belong within a living community.
Narrative Significance
The Cleansing of Threewells is a threshold event in Broccoli’s development. The character enters the settlement with a friendly instinct and a weakly defined cleaning ability, but emerges as someone capable of converting compassion, improvisation, and repetition into effective action. The event’s emotional center is not triumphant mastery; it is the decision to keep moving after grief. Broccoli’s tears and the later system notification occupy the same sequence, placing personal loss beside quantifiable progress rather than allowing either one to erase the other.
The event further defines the book’s contrast between cleanliness and violence. Broccoli does not purify Threewells by remaining untouched by its horror. The character is clawed, cut, exhausted, and forced to fight at close range with a makeshift flail. Cleaning magic works through contact with the very unlife it is meant to remove. Purity is therefore not an inherited condition but an active practice, repeatedly performed against ghosts, Evil mana, and the consequences of abandonment.
By defeating the wraith and clearing the hostile dead, Broccoli completes the first substantial version of the class promise to cleanse the world’s impurities. The result is not merely a victory notification. It is the point at which the Cinnamon Bun class, Cleaning skill, makeshift weapon, quest obligation, and moral commitment become one coherent method of adventuring.
